New plan to improve perception of Wrexham town centre

PLANS are being drawn up to create more positive perceptions of Wrexham town centre.

In September Wrexham Council’s employment, business and investment scrutiny committee set up a group to focus on improving the image of the town centre.

The group has produced facts and figures it claims highlight the difference between some perceptions of the town and  reality.

In a report to go before the council’s scrutiny committee tomorrow, the group states the percentage of vacant units in Wrexham was 10 per cent in October, below the national average of 11.3 per cent.

Another perception tackled was that the establishment of Island Green and Eagles Meadow retail centres at opposite ends of the town had led to the fragmentation of the town.

The committee says a map recently developed by the town centre manager illustrates the walking distance between Island Green and Eagles Meadow is just eight minutes.

Another positive finding was that average sales figures for town centre businesses were up 6.9 per cent in October last year following four years of consecutive decline.

However, the report does acknowledge the retail landscape in Wrexham and other UK town centres is set to shrink in the coming years.

It states: “It will be increasingly important for the authority to work with retailers and town centre landowners to encourage them to prepare for and embrace change.”

Recommendations include developing a coherent and cohesive approach to changing the negative perception of the town centre alongside a promotional campaign.

It includes provisions for £20,000 worth of funding to be spent on promotions such as a radio campaign, car stickers, a town centre mobile phone app, a five-minute town centre film and a newspaper campaign.

The report will be discussed by Wrexham Council’s employment, business and investment scrutiny committee tomorrow.

Ha like that will work. The streets could be paved with gold and residents of a town or city will still deride it.
