A COUPLE who bought a raffle ticket at a Wrexham supermarket have become lottery millionaires.

Sue and James Schofield are one of 25 lucky new year lottery millionaires after discovering their win on the EuroMillions Millionaire Raffle draw as midnight struck.

As the news sunk in yesterday, the couple from Rhoswiel, Weston Rhyn, said they were still “overwhelmed”.

Sue, 47, said: “You never expect to win.

“It will change our lives. It’s like nothing you have ever thought of. The realisation that all you have dreamed of you can plan – it’s a surreal feeling.”

James added: “It’s disbelief. We checked it online and then phoned up a couple of times to make sure.”

James, 37, had bought the ticket from Morrisons in Wrexham, but said he usually makes the regular lucky dip purchase in Conwy on his delivery driver rounds.

Both were quick to hand in their notices the following morning.

Now they are aiming to turn their dreams of setting up a Shropshire-based boarding facility for cats and exotic animals a reality.

James said: “I thought there was a chance it could be wrong. I wanted to speak to someone straight away but no one was working at that time. I handed my notice in not entirely sure.”

Sue, who worked as a supervisor at ISS Facilities Services, said the news was met with shock by family, friends and colleagues, including her daughters Pagan, 27, and Gabrielle, 18, James’ 12-year-old son Harry and four-year-old grandson Jacob.

She said: “People think you’re joking, then when they realise you’ve won they congratulate you. Lots have said it couldn’t have happened to nicer people – people keep rubbing me for luck.”

Despite the temptation to spend the money, the seven-figure sum remains untouched, though they admit they plan to buy a Range Rover for James and an Audi A5 for Sue, pay for driving lessons and cars for Sue’s daughters and finally enjoy the honeymoon they have dreamed of – five-and-a-half years after tying the knot.

And they will continue to play the lottery, with James already returning to the supermarket to purchase another lucky dip.

Sue said they were looking forward to a short break to relax and let the news sink in.
She added: “We have to pinch ourselves – it won’t change us as people.

“We don’t do anything by halves, but we’re both grounded. It’s just nice to have time together, nice to have an opportunity to do what we want to do.”

As previously reported in the Leader, Claire McManus and Scott Connah, both 30 from Connah’s Quay, were also lucky winners on the EuroMillions Millionaire Raffle.
