MORE than 250 people attended the funeral of a Wrexham FC favourite.
A host of former Wrexham FC stars were among the mourners who packed Pentrebychan Crematorium for the funeral of former player George Showell, 78, who collapsed at Sainsbury’s in Wrexham on December 18.
In his career Mr Showell won an FA Cup medal with Wolves in 1960 before joining Wrexham from Bristol City in 1966.
When his playing career ended in 1968 because of a recurring knee injury, the defender became a part of the coaching staff and was later a physiotherapist at The Racecourse until 1990.
He decided to retire after the Football League changed the rules meaning the physiotherapists were required to have qualifications to carry out the role.
His wife Gwen, son Mark, daughter Tracy, son-in-law Stephen and grandchildren Luke and Ryan heard a moving tribute from his granddaughter Zoe.
Former teammate and manager Arfon Griffiths described Mr Showell as a great player, who gave the club long and distinguished service.
Rev Emyr Owen invited mourners to make a round of applause and You’ll Never Walk Alone played as they left.
Former player and Chester manager Ken Roberts was at the service along with former players Joey Jones, Mickey Evans, Graham Whittle, Ian Moir, Eddie Niedzwiecki, Mickey Thomas, Dixie McNeil, Alec Lucas, Neil Salathiel, Geoff Davis, Steve Buxton, Nigel Beaumont, Idris Pryce, Nick Hencher and former Racecourse groundsman Johnny Edwards.
Mr Showell’s death came shortly after the death of former Wrexham winger Steve Fox, who made more than 140 appearances for the Reds during the 1970s and 80s.
Mr Fox died earlier this month, aged 54, from cancer.
