DRIVERS passing through Wrexham faced traffic gridlock last night following two accidents on the A483.

Motorists called the Leader to ask for updates on what was going on and to report how bad the hold-ups were.

Two accidents happened within a short period of time of each other. They caused long queues on the Chester-bound lanes of the A483 and spilled over into the town itself as drivers tried to find a way around the jams.

The first collision was between the Ruthin and Mold turn-offs four and five at just before 6pm, followed by the second accident between the Rhostyllen and Ruthin turn-offs.

One motorist from Garden Village phoned to say: “I was stuck on the A483 for about an hour.

“Traffic was barely moving but there were a lot of emergency vehicles driving past past during that time.

“There were quite a few cars involved in the accident and the ones we saw looked to be badly damaged.”

A motorist from Coedpoeth said: “From what I could make out a large section of the town was a nightmare.

“People were trying to take short cuts and avoid the delays. Homestead Lane near the back of the Maelor Hospital was one of the worst places affected.

“There were temporary traffic lights in place because of construction work, but people were ignoring the signals with some going through on red.

“That was causing chaos. They resolved it by getting out of their cars and moving the traffic bollards, then just managed to squeeze through.

“There was a real bad mood among drivers. People were just looking to move on as fast as they possibly could. They were very frustrated. Motorists thought they were taking a short cut and ended up getting caught in a real jam.

“I would estimate that queues at Homestead Lane were around three quarters of a mile long. I saw queues on the A483 which were absolutely massive.”

A spokeswoman for North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said firefighters from Wrexham made the cars involved electrically safe and cleared the road.

A spokeswoman for the Welsh Ambulance service said two casualties had been taken to the Wrexham Maelor Hospital to be checked over.
