A NEW youth choir inspired by Glee has won the backing of Wrexham’s own Olympian Tom James.

Gold medallist rower and Wrexham hero Tom James has been named patron of Dragonsong, the Wrexham Youth Choir, and is proud to put his name to what he believes will be a “fantastic opportunity” for youngsters across the county.

Tom, who was granted the prestigious Freedom of Wrexham Borough honour has thrown his support behind the new project much to the surprise and delight of the choir’s chair Andrew Fergus, of Gresford.

“I’d been doing a lot of work to get help with setting up and promoting the choir, including speaking to staff at King’s College in Chester.

“When I found out Tom James was going to visit them I asked them to pass on a message for me about the Dragonsong project.

“I didn’t think anything more of it so when I heard back from Tom a few days later that he’d love to get involved I nearly fell off my chair.”

The choir, which will sing modern songs to contemporary soundtracks, will welcome members between the ages of 13 and 18 for its first rehearsal at Central Station, Hill Street, Wrexham, and no audition will be needed.

And Andrew, himself a sportsman and keen rower, believes this is what got Tom hooked on the idea.

“I think he could see that the venue was so much better than a dusty old church hall and that we wanted real inclusion by doing away with auditions and refusing to charge members loads of money.

“It’s a very Wrexham focused project which I think appealed to him too.

“To think that an idea I had driving home from work one day could end up with such a prestigious patron is a tremendous honour and has been a massive boost and I really hope it will inspire more youngsters to come along on the night.”

Tom described the choir as “a great chance for the younger generation to get involved in something new and rewarding”.

He said: “There’s a strong history of great choirs and singers that come from Wales so I’d strongly encourage parents and children to come and visit and see for yourselves what a fantastic opportunity Dragonsong is.

“I’d like to thank the committee and other supporters for putting their own time and energy into this initiative.

“This is a great example of local people and businesses putting something back in to the Wrexham community.

“I wish our fantastic musical director Charlotte Jones and the new choir the best of luck and I look forward to hearing the results."

The first rehearsal at Central Station will be held tomorrow between 6.30pm and 8pm.
