Let’s face it - most of us spend a lot of time at home. While it would be nice to spend evenings at restaurants, bars and movie theatres, most of us simply lack the time and money to live such an extravagant lifestyle. Instead, our home becomes the place we retreat to at the end of a long day, and for this reason it should be our sanctuary.
The unfortunate reality is that the home can easily become a drab and stale environment, with old furnishings and clutter leading to a deteriorated state of mind. The good news is that making a few simple changes to one’s home surroundings (like updating your sofa), can work wonders for peace of mind.
The Chinese have understood the importance of creating harmony within the home for thousands of years, condensing this knowledge into the ancient art of feng shui. While there is no need to become a feng shui expert to revamp your home, it is easy to be inspired by its example. The idea of creating order and streamlining external surroundings to soothe the senses can be applied with nothing more than a little common sense.
The first step to creating happiness in the home is to de-clutter. Take a large bin bag and get rid of all that excess junk that has somehow found its way into your life without a proper exit. Whether it’s old clothes, dog-eared magazines, scrap paper or unwanted gifts, all of the excess debris that is scattered around your home is subconsciously taxing you of your mental clarity. Throwing things away is like ripping off a plaster – you have to do it quickly to avoid the sting. If you haven’t used something in six months, just get rid of it!
The second thing you may wish to do is update your furnishings. While not everyone can afford expensive new pieces of furniture like a sleek, modern leather sofa, a few smaller pieces of furniture or a few basic accessories can really do a lot to spice things up. Whether it’s a new throw for the couch, a comfy footstool, or some beautiful modern artwork, many of these items can be bought relatively inexpensively online or at weekend markets.
If you are really restricted by a lack of funds, you can still give your home a new lease of life by simply rearranging the furniture. This doesn’t need to be limited to large objects like the couch and television. Try also rearranging, photo frames, artwork, lighting, ornaments and even the inside of your cupboards. With a little thought and care you can create a much more ordered flow to your entire home.
Your home not only helps define who you are to your guests, it also helps shape your personality. By creating harmony, order and beauty in your surroundings, you will also boost your mood, eliminate stress and above all, ensure that your home is a personal paradise that you long to return to at the end of each and every day.
