A YOUNG mother and baby had a lucky escape when a pram was set on fire in the doorway to a block of flats in Wrexham.

Fire crews were called to the flats on Bryneglwys Road at about 8.50pm on Saturday night.

A pushchair had been set on fire in the hallway to the building.

There were four residents inside, including a mother and baby.

A spokesman for North Wales Fire and Rescue said the fire had been started deliberately.

Fire crews used breathing apparatus and one hosereel to put the fire out and rescue the upstairs residents. Bethan Ross, 28, who lives downstairs in the block of flats, managed to escape and called 999.

She said: “The smoke alarms started going off. I opened the living-room door and the hallway to my flat was full of smoke.

“I ran and got the phone and then opened the door of the flat and there was a fire going.

“It was in the main entrance hallway, by the door, so it was a problem getting past it.”

She added: “The people upstairs couldn’t get out.

“When the fire brigade got here they went in, cleared the smoke and got them out.” The three upstairs residents were checked at the scene for smoke inhalation, but no-one was taken to hospital.

The pram was destroyed and there was some smoke damage to the building.

Temporary Insp Alun Davies, of North Wales Police, said: “A local male has been arrested in connection with the incident. He was interviewed and released on bail to appear at Wrexham Police Station at a future date. Police are pursuing enquiries.”

He asked for anybody with information to call 101, quoting incident number N022089.
