Suspended AM’s relief as ordeal draws to a close

WREXHAM’S former council leader should know this week whether he is finally able to take up the Welsh Assembly seat he won in May.

The agony he has gone through since being accused of breaking election rules,
and even committing electoral fraud, will be ended when fellow AMs vote on his admission to the Senedd chamber on Wednesday.

In advance of the debate, Cllr Aled Roberts has spoken of the trauma the affair has meant for himself and his family. He has also thanked the many people who have contacted him to express their support.

Cllr Roberts, who is still a councillor for Ponciau, won the North Wales regional Assembly seat  for the Liberal Democrats at May’s election but he was excluded from the chamber after officials discovered that at the time of his election he was still a member of the Valuation Tribunal for Wales, which is not allowed under the rules.

Fellow Liberal Democrat John Dixon was also barred from taking up his South Central Wales seat after finding himself in a similar situation over his membership of the Care Council for Wales.

The matter took a more serious turn when UKIP MEP for Wales, John Bufton, reported the two men to the police for alleged electoral fraud. Last week, South Wales Police told them no charges will be brought against them.

Since then Cllr Roberts has been awaiting the findings of a separate probe by the Assembly’s Commissioner for Standards, Gerard Elias QC.

Cllr Roberts said: “The report is complete and has been delivered to the assembly’s presiding officer and party leaders. I have not seen the report but I understand it broadly confirms what I have been saying, that the information I was given about my membership of the tribunal wasn’t correct. The information, which came from the Electoral Commission and was passed on by the returning officers, referred to the 2006 rules about the tribunal rather than the 2010 rules, which had changed.”

He added: “It’s been a frustrating time for me and a very difficult time for my family and I just want to situation to be resolved. The support I have received from my colleagues on the council has been gratefully received.

“I have also had lots of support locally, in the form of many phone calls and emails. I have also been stopped in the street. All this has been very heartening and I would like to thank everyone for that.”

Nothing to say and not very interested....lest my comment be removed...but on the Assembly...what exactly is the point of it ?...relying on the settlement from Westminister to run its own financial affairs...that is the twenty fields it is allowed to

Hope Mr Roberts gets in, as I'm on the Cardiff train often, if I see him he can explain while on his watch Wrexham Village bandits were granted planning in the name of benifiting WXM FC with no safegaurds in place, all journey every journey.

Whatever people on here may think about Mr.Roberts, he is obviously liked and respected by the many people who know him. There is no way he would have got elected otherwise. No sane person would simply vote Lib Dem at this time for party political reasons. Even fewer would vote for Eleanor Burnham based on her "Me Me Me" attitude. Let Aled take his seat, to bar him is an affront to democracy.

Democracy, with respecct... he was an unelected candidate, had his name been on the balot paper he would not have been elected, but those are the rules by which our country is run, its up to those in the senedd now to decide by a vote.

It should also be noted that he voted against public opinion with ' City status', and the people of Rhostyllen dont think he's very democratic, with his promise of abiding by a referendum only to u turn, or with his conflict of interest in a Rhos school... sorry but I'm not impressed by his politics or his honour.

If his name had been on the list ballot paper then he would have got more votes. It was no secret that he was standing on the Lib Dem list and I had more election leaflets with his name & photo through my door than what I had for the constituency candidate. I know people who hate the Lib Dems with a passion, yet still voted for them because of Aled Roberts. He must have done something right somewhere along the line.

Democracy...good point....I had at least 2 letters from each of the candidates...I didn't realise all of them knew me by first name...sadly lacking though was the chance to find out what policies they actually promoted...or discuss with them...even the Leader failed in that respect...a very lack lustre campaign with candidates seemingly in hiding from the general public.

How much is this costing? Mr Roberts may be in because the Welsh was wrong, Mr Dixon is out because the English is correct. I await the farce in Theatre Clwyd! ce, the Assembly does not ing for North Wales but he rules in Welsh were out of date so Mr Roberts may be ok. Mr Dixon is out because he read the english.......
