FOCUS Wales kicks off this week with gigs across all genres taking place in a number of venues across Wrexham.

With so much to choose from it can be difficult to know where to start. Let Jamie Bowman point you in the direction of some must-see acts...

GAZ COOMBES

The former Supergrass frontman brings his seizable sideburns to Wrexham fresh from releasing his brilliant new solo album World’s Strongest Man.

Gaz will perform a special intimate solo set on the Saturday of the festival – May 12 - at the William Aston Hall.

William Aston Hall, Glyndwr University / Saturday May 12 / 8:50 PM

BILL RYDER JONES

Bill co-founded Wirral hitmakers The Coral, playing as their lead guitarist from 1996 until 2008, before pursuing a solo career, which has seen him write both his own albums and film scores, as well as producing records for other artists, such as Hooton Tennis Club and The Wytches and appearing as a guest guitarist with the Arctic Monkeys.

Expect to hear tunes from his stunning 2015 album West Kirby County Primary.

Central Station / Friday May 11 / 11:15 PM

EUROS CHILDS

Hailing from Pembrokeshire, Euros fronted the band Gorky's Zygotic Mynci from 1991 until 2004, before going solo and releasing 12 albums to date – the last nine having been released on Euros' own National Elf label.

His latest, House Arrest, was released in November last year and features the single My Colander - a catchy paean to the kitchen utensil no-one can do without when it comes to draining things.

Ty Pawb / Friday May 11 / 9:30 PM

JANE WEAVER

To those in the know Jane Weaver has been a byword for quality music for years now but it is only since the release of her last album, 2014’s The Silver Globe, that she has received the deserved amount of attention now being thrown her way.

With the release of the excellent follow-up, Modern Kosmology, the spotlight is finally shining on the Widnes-raised avant-folk singer's special brand of electro psych.

St Giles’ / Thursday May 10 / 9:00 PM

KIDSMOKE

Formed in 2013 in Wrexham, hometown heroes Kidsmoke consist of Lance Williams on vocals and guitar, James Stickels on bass and vocals, recent additions Sophie Ballamy on guitar and vocals and Ash Turner on drums.

The indie-pop four-piece note some of their influences as The Smiths and Joy Division, among more contemporary bands like Wild Nothing, Real Estate and Deerhunter.

Kidsmoke perform twice at the festival - first off on the Friday May 11 at Ty Pawb at 10:15pm, and then again, with a more unplugged set up, on the Saturday May 12 at the William Aston Hall, supporting Gaz Coombes, on stage at 7:55pm.

DAMO SUZUKI

A genuine musical legend, former CAN vocalist Damo Suzuki is now aged 68 but continues to lead what is known as Damo Suzuki's Network – as he tours, he performs live improvisational music with various local musicians, which he calls "Sound Carriers".

Suzuki was with Can from 1970 to 1973, recording a number of well-regarded albums such as Tago Mago, Future Days and Ege Bamyasi. His free form, often improvised lyrics, were sung in no particular language so expect the unexpected.
