Young footballers will be rallying together to support a five-year-old boy with a muscle-wasting condition.
The Mini’s Charity Football Tournament is set to kick-off on Sunday, July 1, to raise money and awareness for Jenson Edwards, of Buckley, who was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) at age three.
Three squads will take to the pitch at 10am at Argoed Sports and Social Club, Bryn-Y-Baal, including an under 6’s, under 7’s and under 8’s team.
Organisers Matthew Williams, Katie Deary and Shaun Buxton, friends of Jenson’s parents, are determined to have a fun-filled day as the local “mini footballers” go head to head.
Matthew is appealing to residents across the county to back the competition, to help Jenson’s family achieve more than the incredible £30,000 they have raised already.
Dad Craig Edwards is keen to highlight that money raised by ‘’Team Jenson’,’ a dedicated group of family and friends who take on various challenges throughout the area, is split between two funds.
He said: “Money raised on this event is for both Team Jenson, which looks into research for Muscular Dystrophy UK, and also Jenson’s fight - gofundme account , which is solely set up to help Jenson make memories and will also help towards special equipment he is going to need in the near future.”
Shaun Buxton, of Buckley, is appealing for more volunteers on the day.
He said: “We are also looking for people to referee some games.
“No experience is needed, and even if you can offer an hour of your time it would be a great help.”
