Youngsters are gearing up for a play depicting life in the 1950s with help from history group members.

Stephen Lloyd and Russell Harrison Jones attended Black Lane School between 1947 and 1955. Although they became good school friends sixty years passed until they renewed their friendship thanks to meeting of The Broughton History group.

Last summer Russell told Steve that he was thinking of writing a play about being a child living in

Pentre Broughton in the 1950s.

Steve was delighted to be asked to collaborate in the writing and a date was set for a public performance.

The play is being performed by a group of children from Brynteg School and illustrates the monumental changes that have taken place during the writers` lifetimes.

The play consists of a series of unconnected scenes showing many facets of the lives of 1950s` hildren living in the Broughton area.

Headteacher Rachael Connell said: "The children started practicing a few hours a week and they are loving it.

"We have a member of staff that is a volunteer at Grove Park Theatre so they have all been in and picked up their costumes and they are really enjoying it.

"It is a very nice community project and it is good for them to find out more about the area."

Broughton History Group is keen to establish strong links with the local primary schools and hopes that this venture will help the children of today to learn something from two children who lived in those far-off days.

"Smiling in the Sunlight, Laughing in the Rain" is being performed in Brynteg Memorial Hall on Friday, March 16 at 7pm.

Tickets cost £4 for adults and £2 for children.

They are available from Brynteg Library and Brynteg CP School.
