A RESIDENT brought her village to life by re-creating a childhood carnival.

More than 150 local youngsters registered for the Llanferres event, which saw its first carnival in about 50 years.

Sheila Hawkes wanted to revive the carnival for which she and many other residents have cherished childhood memories and to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Village Hall.

Gwyneth Dillon, clerk for Llanferres Community Council, said: “The carnival was very well-attended.

“It was a fantastic day and the weather was brilliant.

“I would be surprised if it wasn’t held again next year, or every two years. It took a huge amount of organising.”

Starting at the local pub, the Druid Inn, the carnival parade began proceedings with the carnival queen, Olivia Johnson and her entourage of eight local attendants leading the procession on a specially made boat.

This was followed by the crowning ceremony and official opening in the village hall by the Reverend Daniel Stroud and local resident Olive Parry.

Attractions ranged from traditional games to bouncy castles, all supported by volunteers and fundraisers for organisations in the area.
