EYE-WITNESSES last night described seeing a pedestrian lying on a road screaming out in pain after being hit by a bus.

The man – in his late 20s and believed to be from the village – is thought to have had his leg broken after he was struck by the bus near the corner of Bangor Road and High Street in Johnstown.

A single-decker Arriva bus was involved in the crash, which happened close to the New Inn pub shortly before 4.30pm yesterday.

Lisa Valentine, 23, of Ruabon, who has worked at the pub for two years, rushed out after seeing traffic backing up around the scene.

“When I went out there was a lad lying on the floor and he was screaming,” she said.

“He was in pain and he was getting gas and air from paramedics and they put him in the ambulance.

“It looked like he had broken his leg.

“The windscreen of the bus was smashed but he was lying at the back so I’m not sure if he was dragged by the bus.”

Ms Valentine said the bus was carrying between 20 and 25 passengers at the time of the crash.

“They were all sitting there looking at the lad out the back window wondering what was going on,” she added.

“The driver was walking around the bus looking like he was in shock.”
Crowds gathered at the scene as paramedics took the injured man away to the Wrexham Maelor Hospital.

“The whole of Johnstown gathered out here,” Ms Valentine added.

The crash brought traffic in the area to a standstill and three hours later at 7.30pm the bus and five police cars were still on the scene while investigation work continued.

A woman who works in the Johnstown Premier Store, near the scene of the accident, said: “There are still five police cars there and they are taking pictures of the area.”
