A family were so fed up of litter being strewn across their road they brought in a little extra help.

Richard Haggerty and Paola Albertazzi brought in their nine-year-old llama Domingo to look after an unridable horse and protect the chickens they keep on at their Glan Llyn Farmhouse B&B in Eryrys, near Mold.

But after the horse recovered and Domingo took a dislike to the hens, Richard decided to put him to work.

Domingo's hardworking attitude drew the attention of Keep Wales Tidy who made him their latest litter champion and the mascot for the Spring Clean Cymru campaign.

Richard, 49, said: "We decided we'd give him something to do, we didn't want him idling about so over the last few weeks he's been going out picking up litter with me and he seems to be enjoying himself.

“Paola and I have little litter pickers and we pick up cans, bottles, bring it all back to sort and recycle.

“He’s not advanced enough to pick litter but maybe next time he'll be doing the recyling himself.

“He’s easy to train, to get the hang of the litter saddle, he’s pretty clever in picking things up and learning things, so it was pretty straightforward.

“We do have sheep in the summer to keep the grass down as we have too much land for the animals we've got.

“He doesn’t protect the chickens as he’s decided they’re not with his lot and he kept an unridable horse company but that horse is okay now so we keep him on.

“Kids love getting their picture taken with him, he’s pretty popular.”

Paola and Richard of are often appalled at the litter they see strewn along the roadside and hedges near their business and regularly go out to do something about it.

Paola, 57, said: “I have always gone out litter picking and I noticed that having Domingo with me, makes people take a bit more notice – and of course he loves the attention.”

Denbighshire's Keep Wales Tidy project officer Gareth Jones said: “We’ve found bottles full of dead beetles, lizards drowned in crisp packets and kittens strangled by carrier bags to name but a few incidents.”

Keep Wales Tidy’s Spring Clean Cymru campaign runs from March 1 to 5 and is part of the UK-wide Great British Spring Clean which aims to inspire the people of Wales to get outdoors, be active and be proud of where they live.

Community groups, schools and businesses will be taking part, and everyone is encouraged to register their events, or take part in organised events right around Wales.
